Biography

a usually written history of a person's life

As an award-winning freelancer, I am informed by the notion of discovery; as a writer, researcher, and historical consultant, I take readers on a journey, giving them opportunity to see a familiar landscape, like Toronto, with new eyes.

Specializing in local history (though Toronto is not the exclusive focus of my curiosity, or of what some have called my “estimable research ability”), I enjoy finding new angles and information, especially the human hook.

My work connecting past and present, historical context and current events, memorable characters and contemporary figures, has received several honours, most recently (with Kevin Plummer and David Wencer) a 2014 National Magazine Award for work on Torontoist's "Historicist" column.

As a popular historian, I make history relevant to current events. My work, as contributor or columnist, has appeared in publications such as Spacing, The Grid, Toronto Life, and Torontoist.

Often hired as a historical consultant, my clients include developers requiring street names, authors seeking factual backstories for their fictional characters, authors requiring additional context for their non-fictional work, and industry organizations preparing for major milestones. I’ve also been interviewed for the online-bonus features for television shows such as Murdoch Mysteries.

I also write feature articles for non-profit and community-building organizations, and create content for advertorials.

I enjoy speaking about Toronto's past to groups including historical societies, theatrical audiences, and walking tours. My speaking credits include Heritage Toronto, North Toronto Historical Society, Acting Up Stage Company, the Arts & Letters Club, Jane’s Walks, and Doors Open.

I’d love to talk to you, if you could benefit from the contributions of a skilled communications professional. I’m seeking freelance, part- or full-time opportunities as a writer, researcher, editor, or coordinator/administrator.
